Oscar Night at Penn

On Tuesday March 26, the SASgov Social Committee organized an Oscars Movie Night in the Armado Recital Hall, in Irvine Auditorium. In the days leading up to the event, SASgov Social put out a poll asking people to vote on which film that from this year’s Best Picture Oscar contenders would be the film of choice for our very own Oscars Night. The options were : Roma, BlacKkKlansman, Black Panther, Green Book, Vice, A Star Is Born, Bohemian Rhapsody, and The Favourite. The people spoke, and their decision was Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman!

The event kicked off at 7:30 pm, and a number of people representing multiple departments showed up for the screening. There was a great and lively atmosphere while people were getting their Free Pizza (!). Friends got together after the work day and chatted, making new connections and (hopefully!) acquaintances. One thing was clear: everyone was excited to watch the film!

The film did not disappoint. Throughout the screening, we were gripped, jolted, and entertained by BlacKkKlansman. Based on a true story, the film is masterfully tied it back to contemporary politics and important albeit often difficult discussions that need to be had. The remarkable representation of Black History, and the incisive commentary on politics alongside great writing and acting, made it a great movie experience. We hope there are more to come!
